American businesswoman and fashion star Iris Apfel dies at the age of 102

after a successful exhibition of  her eclectic wardrobe. 

The 2005 exhibition put Apfel on the map, and his fame was further increased by a 2014 documentary called Iris by filmmaker Albert Maysles, which examines the life and creativity of the style connoisseur. 

She was  97 years old when she signed a modeling contract with global agency IMG Models, which also represents models such as Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss. 

 

Apfel agent Lori Sale confirmed his death  in a statement  to the PA news agency on Friday

“ Working with Iris Apfel was an honor, always greeted with the familiar question: ‘What do you have for me today?’” he said.“I will miss his daily calls, always greeted with the familiar question: ‘What do you have  for me today?’ A testament to his insatiable desire to work.” 

 

“She was a visionary in every sense of the word . He saw the world through a unique lens, adorned with huge, distinctive glasses that sat on his nose. 

“Through these lenses he saw the world as a kaleidoscope of colors, a canvas of patterns and prints.”His artistic eye transformed the everyday into the extraordinary and his ability to combine the unconventional with the elegant was nothing short of magical.” 

Apfel’s death was also announced to her nearly three million fans on Instagram with a photo of the star with her famous oversized round Glasses announced.  

Among those honored was the American designer Tommy Hilfiger, who praised Apfel as an “innovator and market leader” in the world of textiles and style who “will go down in history”. 

 

In a statement  to PA she said: “Iris Apfel has become a world-famous fashion icon due to her incredible talent, not only as an artist but also as an influencer.” 

“With his big heart and his magical touch, he has touched everyone, the person he meets has had an amazing effect on  many people.Ashley Banjo from 

Diversity and Ted Lasso actress Hannah Waddingham were also among the tributes, along with American singer Lenny Kravitz, who said: “You have mastered the art of living. Thank you for your energy and inspiration.” 

Apfel was born in 1921 and studied art history at  New York University before attending the School of Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin. 

During her career, Apfel founded the international textile  company Old World Weavers in 1950 with her husband Carl, who died in 2015 at the age of 100. 

At the age of 80, she rose to fame in the fashion world when  her eclectic wardrobe was put together. the 2005 exhibition entitled Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection at the Costume Institute, which explored “the affinity between fashion and accessory designs” and examined “the power of clothing and accessories to affirm style through fashion” .
